Slippers Look Like Feet

Ever wondered why your parents did some things they did. I always wonder. My dad regimented activities had so many that I had a screw lose or something. I will only mention two here, because there are too many to put in a test. I spent one time watching my father as a child and listen to it, and it was not until I was forty that I realized some of the benefits of their behavior and very recently some of the real benefits of their behavior. My dad had an incredible fear of catching a cold. He came home from World War II with malaria and tuberculosis. He was always cautious of sharing food, towels, glasses and cutlery. Any brand of water in the cutlery in a restaurant was immediately returned. I remember once at a restaurant New York came back three times a fork. Some people send food back the money sent back. It got so bad that a guy sitting near my father said to use that he thought the waitress was on hidden camera. If you sneezed were accused of trying to bring a cold in the house, trying to kill him. He was hospitalized on 27 December, 1967 because of the resurgence of tuberculosis and was sent to nursing in the VA hospital in East Orange NJ for 3 months. When he left that’s when anything and everything that could give him a cold. Two things were absolute, cold feet and white flour. I never saw my father walk without shoes or slippers. He did not I wanted to walk three feet without putting on a pair of sneakers. If you sneezed always wonder what you ate. My sister, my mother, and I thought I was crazy. The bare feet and white flour to make you sick and if ill, as he himself said, “If I get a cold I’m finished.”
All I have seen these things always stuck with me. When I was about 40 years started fighting my weight. Always watching my calories and try to stay in shape. Atkins Diet started to become popular, along with other diets that restricted carbohydrates and other foods that contain you guessed it, white flour. Exactly what the guy was talking about 30 years ago. Suddenly everyone had an allergy carbohydrates, was gaining weight, had type II diabetes, hypertension, and all sorts of health problems due to white flour. I started to watch my intake of white flour and I started to lose weight. The things I loved as a kid was something that could kill me. The things that my father said he could make me sick I was doing wrong.
Recently I was walking the backyard with a pair of flip-flops. I have a tendency to drag feet when I walk especially since my feet are kind of flat, something my father had as well. I approached the ship to the concrete pavement and crashed against the foot law in an Adirondack chair. I know I broke the middle finger, at least seemed broken. The next day, through the garage I crushed his finger in the same hand Weighing the center of the track. I got into the car in agony looked down at the foot that had the same $ 3.00 flip-flop on it and I could hear my father tells me: “Why Please put your slippers. “This is not the first time I went out that finger, but it is the first time I realized my father knew me because I was just like him. I did not want me to go through the same agony that had happened. He did not want me to gain weight or heel of my toes just had a strange way to me known. I do not think I ever gave the reason why he did what he did, that’s probably why I took thirty years to find out for myself. If I could ask some would ask my two daughters are learning the reasons why I do what I do faster than I learned things about my father. There is a question that children ask all the time “Why do we have to do this?” Sometimes by the time they realized it is too late. So put on your shoes and have a piece of bread toast, you glad you did.
